The trend for basket-like bags is in full swing in the fast paced world of fashion. This month’s BOTM features Seasalt’s ‘Coast Path Basket’ produced from natural straw. Inspired by their head designer’s love of French market baskets, the Large Coast Path Basket is a fantastic example of the supply chain working together to bring an idea in at the right price point. Planning ahead is key when it comes to a bespoke product like this one. We started working on this project 18 months ahead of the launch date. That way we could ensure there was time to perform all the relevant testing required. Here is this month’s Bag of the Month: Seasalt Basket.
Seasalt – a Cornish fashion company started in Penzance in 1981. It has grown into a UK wide independent retailer. Their unique range of women’s clothing, footwear and accessories are inspired by the creative and maritime heritage of Cornwall. With a strong focus on ethics and quality, we have worked closely with the team to ensure the products we supply meet their strict corporate and social responsibility objectives.
The Design Brief
Designing a bag is fun, particularly when it involves working with a team with clear ideas and objectives. Seasalt’s senior designer was looking for a bag that was made from 100% natural materials with a nod to beach life. Her vision was a bag that could be carried to the beach or a fancy restaurant, classy but natural. Exploring the options for materials was the first stage. With so many natural materials now available, the decision to use seagrass came down to appearance and performance. Once dried out, sea grasses make exceptionally good material for use in coiled basketry. The ancient skill is still used today to produce straw bags and baskets just like this. A tapered shape to the bag ensures it can be easily stacked in store and helps reduce the impact of shipping.
Branding the bags
Customers buy into brands for a variety of reasons. Seasalt’s customers are fiercely loyal and this is rewarded by the fact that every design decision puts their customers right at the heart of decision making. Famous for their prints, Seasalt products are usually identifiable regardless of branding. As there is no print on this item the swing tags and woven labels need to do all the talking. Here they specified a premium tag, tied with a natural twine to ensure the bag is 100% plastic free. They have been a great success already for Spring/Summer 2018 and we look forward to seeing these bags promenading across the UK as the summer rolls on.
