Riedel Wine Glasses – the key to wine is in the glass

Riedel glassware on sale now

When our recently launched range of Riedel glassware first passed by my desk, I couldn’t help but pause and reflect. That might sound a little Californian-OTT of me, but there was more to it than that.

I first discovered Riedel – The Wine Glass Company while frequenting the acclaimed Los Angeles eateries which I was privileged to work in. While the establishments themselves held their food and wine in high esteem, they also held their crockery, stemware and the conduits they served them in, in equally high regard as well, after all, I’m the first to appreciate that presentation is everything.

The Riedel family history began in 1723 in Bohemia and now spans ten generations.  The family has endured the Bavarian War of Succession (cira 1778-1779), the Napoleonic Wars (cira 1803-1815) and World War II (cira 1939-1945), it’s pretty safe to say they’ve seen it all. And throughout these huge world events, the Riedel family and business continued to prevail.

Specific highlights and achievements from the history of Riedel:

  • Refined production of chandelier crystal
  • Formulated two new colours in glass:  fluorescent yellow and green.
  • Developed the finishing and automatisation of the production of glass beads and registered numerous patents.
  • Invented spinnable glass fibers
  • Invented a ground-based system of air reconnaissance using radar to formulate a glass lens 76cm. A global revelation.
  • Invented the modern wine glass as we know it.

Claus Riedel (9th generation) was the first person in the long history of the glass to design a glass for wine whereby the very shape of the glass was in direct relationship with the wine character itself. It was this pioneering invention that established functional wine glasses as we know it today.

In effect, it was Claus Riedel who first came up with the interplay between form, size and rim of diameter which was optimum for the enjoyment of wine. His glasses were smooth and undecorated. The glass was thin and had a long stem.

“The Riedel family never stamped its name on a single bottle of wine, these master glassmakers have done more to enhance the oenophile’s pleasure than almost any winemaking dynasty.” Time Magazine

It’s unusual to have a product whose family history and contribution to the beverage and food community has been so profoundly celebrated across the globe for its outstanding distinction in both design and purpose.

I am pleased to have Riedel as part of the WBC product range; it’s a no-brainer for those who enjoy fine dining and those who deliver it. It’s also perfect when sold as a collection of add-on wine accessories and gifts in wine shops, delis or gift shops. Now that they’re available from WBC at trade prices, along with the added benefit for you of being able to side-step Riedel’s hefty minimum order, I’m positive you’ll appreciate their addition to our glassware as much as we do.

REASONS FOR RIEDEL

1. Across eleven generations of the same family, Riedel have been producing high quality crystal glassware, resulting in a solid reputation for making the finest glasses money can buy.

2. Each glass has been carefully developed out of sensory workshops designed to engage all the senses, as Riedel recognize that the taste, balance, and finish of wines and beers are affected by the shape of the glass from which they are drunk.

3. You can now add Riedel glasses to your WBC orders at the same prices charged by Riedel UK, without having to worry about meeting minimum order values.

Three cheers to that!
