Following a 15 year career in visual merchandising with brands such as H&M, Burberry and Arcadia, Keri applied her wealth of expertise and founded Tribe Creative London; a leading retail design and VM agency. With many different ventures now under her belt, including build concepts for garden retailer Wyevale, delivering four flagship concessions at Debenhams and interior styling for Hello! Magazine, we know the real icing on Keri’s cake is her new partnership with The Retail School here at WBC (or so we like to believe).

Last week, retailers from all over Europe made their way to Birmingham’s NEC for the annual Spring Fair.

Spring Fair is the UK’s largest retail trade exhibition and where retailers go to get the low down on the latest trends while sourcing and re-stocking for the coming year. The Fair spans 14 different categories and launched a wapping 330,000 new products this year to an eager and ambitious audience. The biggest trend I saw? All things British!

Get ready to roll out the red carpet, the time is now for British brands and British products!!

650 Million Fewer Bags Handed Out In Scotland

The levy on bags introduced in Scotland a year ago has prompted a whopping 90% reduction in plastic bag use, saving 4,000 tonnes of plastic each year and generating more than £6.7 million towards good causes. The environment secretary thanked the Scottish people for showing the rest of the UK they’re “serious about tackling litter, reducing waste and creating a cleaner, greener environment for everyone to enjoy.”

With Wales reporting a 71% reduction since the levy was introduced, England finally followed suit back in October 2015. The initial reports of plastic bag theft and fighting soon died down and shoppers across the whole UK are now buying stylish reusable bags that will eventually stem the flow of single use bags. The growing consumer interest to buy bags that represent their style is driving a new income stream for retailers; bags for life are certainly here to stay.

Last week’s company social saw our very good friends and long standing customer Chase Distillery visit the WBC Showroom for an evening of Vodka tasting and sampling of their world renowned potato vodka. Food was created by none other than south east London’s regular Chefonabike, Chef Mario Presi.

Since way back when, even before that giant of an American greeting card company, ‘Hallmark’, first coined the phrase “…It’s that Hallmark time of year…,” the concept of there being key seasonal hallmarks of the retail calendar has permeated our high streets and influenced the way we shop.

Who knew that Halloween would become such a key date in the UK calendar for retailers? As a YANK myself, I was deeply moved if not to say moderately perplexed the day I first started seeing ‘Libby’s Pumpkin Pie’ showing up on local grocery store shelves in London, especially this past October. It would seem the “Hallmark” time of year knows no geographical bounds.
