On Thursday 24th Jan at 8am we began the second stage of our tree planting programme. In stage 2, 19,000 trees will be planted on 33 acres of our land in Bordeaux, adding to the 10,000 trees we planted last year. The majority of the trees will be Maritime Pine which is very suited to the sandy soil found in the region. On one of the lower lying, damper plots we will be planting Elder Wood.
We hope to complete the planting in the next two weeks and then allow the trees to get on with the all important business of absorbing C02, helping to offset our carbon footprint. We are reliably informed that each tree will absorb an average of 11kg of CO2 per annum during its 30-40 year life cycle so we estimate that the 29,000 trees will absorb 319 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
The nine acres of ancient mixed leaf forest is being surveyed and a management programme will be put in place to preserve and protect it. .
